Bakker Fund Awards Grant to Humanities Foundation

Donation Supports Emergency Fund Assistance to Prevent Homelessness through ShelterNet

Charleston, S.C.- Humanities Foundation®, based here, recently received a grant totaling $8,000 from the Bakker Family Fund, administered by Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina.  The fund assists organizations that focus on helping people with basic human needs.  Humanities Foundation will use the grant to help fund its ShelterNet program, which provides emergency financial assistance for families and individuals who are in immediate danger of eviction from their homes or loss of essential utility service. In 2005, over $129,000 in funds were raised for this program and 1,418 individuals were helped in the tri-county area.  The grant will help Humanities Foundation address the greater demand for ShelterNet assistance in 2006, caused in part by the unprecedented increases in natural gas and electric costs.

In 1999, Linda and Tony Bakker and their children created the Bakker Family Fund to provide funding for a broad range of existing and future charitable needs.  Grants of up to $10,000 are available annually to nonprofit organizations addressing charitable programs in certain targeted areas such as basic human needs; abused, neglected or maltreated persons; economic development; strengthening families; and improved educational opportunities for disadvantaged persons.

Since its founding in 1992, Humanities Foundation® has been a leader in addressing the affordable housing crisis.  In addition to its primary mission to develop affordable housing units, it also provides a range of services for residents, and in the community, that serve to alleviate problems associated with homelessness and affordable housing. The Humanities Foundation focuses its efforts in four major areas – housing development, by serving as a nonprofit developer; emergency financial assistance for housing needs; education and awareness; and technical assistance to those seeking guidance in developing affordable housing.
