Through its ShelterNet Program, Humanities Foundation provides emergency financial assistance for families and individuals who have suffered a crisis or setback and need immediate funding to enable them to stay in their homes.
“…I could not have helped my client and her family keep their home without you. I am so glad we have wonderful agencies like yours around…”
- Christi Crockett, Charleston County DSS
It can take as little as $150 to prevent a family from losing their home, but as much as $1,800 to move a family who becomes homeless back into a home. After several years of providing affordable housing in the Charleston area, Humanities Foundation found that this was not enough to stem the tide of homelessness. ShelterNet was created in 1995 to go beyond the bricks and mortar to help prevent homelessness and the increased need for affordable housing by providing one-time emergency financial assistance to low income individuals and families who are in danger of eviction or utilities shut-off. ShelterNet receives referrals for assistance from over 100 social service and mental health agencies, programs for the aging, hospitals, schools, churches, and other nonprofit organizations who work with low-income families and individuals in need.

ShelterNet depends on contributions from members of the community to support its efforts to keep our neighbors in their homes. With unprecedented increases in natural gas and electric costs this year, the challenge is even greater. We are seeing requests for utility assistance that cost over half of a families’ monthly income. In fact, some families who have given up using heat in the winter or air conditioning in the summer – they simply can’t afford it.
In 2005, 588 households received an average of $200 in assistance through ShelterNet. Donations have immediate results - a donation made today will prevent a family from becoming homeless or losing their utility service tomorrow.
