The Poinsette Apartments: Building Forward on the Eastside

Affordable Housing for Seniors Coming to Charleston’s Eastside

The Poinsette Apartments

In Charleston’s historic Eastside neighborhood, the Humanities Foundation and James Doran Company continue their commitment to thoughtful, community-centered development with an exciting new project—the Poinsette. Named in honor of Septima Poinsette Clark, a pioneering educator and Civil Rights leader, this community will reflect her enduring legacy of empowerment and opportunity.

Situated on land once associated with the former Cooper River Bridge parcel, the Poinsette represents both renewal and progress. The development will feature 88 affordable apartment homes for seniors, designed to provide a welcoming, supportive environment that honors the experiences and contributions of older residents while expanding access to quality housing.

This project is rooted in collaboration. Through a strategic partnership with the City of Charleston, a key property exchange has made it possible to advance multiple community priorities. In addition to creating much-needed housing, the agreement supports critical stormwater drainage improvements—an important step in strengthening flood resilience and protecting the future of the Eastside neighborhood.
